Flood Insurance: Government and Private Options

In the United States, 90% of all natural disasters involve flooding, making floods the most common natural disaster. The damage can be very expensive: The average flood insurance claim was $62,247 in 2016, according to the Insurance Information Institute (III). Flood damage is typically not covered by homeowners or renters insurance policies. Many homes in the United States do not have flood insurance. A 2016 poll conducted by the III found that only 12% of American homeowners had coverage, which was down from 14% in 2015.
