PwC lifts the lid on latest scale-up scheme for insurtechs

PwC | July 26, 2019

This year’s Scale | InsurTech programme by PwC has concluded, and now it’s time for the accounting behemoth to reveal the cohort. The scheme, which ran for 11 weeks in London, featured Artesian Risk & Compliance Hub, Artificial, Atidot, Data-XL, Innovative Applications, Phinsys, REG, and Squirro. The eight participants undertook a business development curriculum and had the opportunity to take part in two tailored pitching events. The scale-up firms gained valuable insight into areas such as fundraising, sales and marketing, as well as leadership and culture. They were supported in identifying commercial prospects and in refining their business model and value propositions. “It gives me great pleasure to announce our cohort of eight innovative insurtech companies identified by us as having great potential to scale within the insurance industry,” said PwC’s global insurtech lead Glynn Austen-Brown.

Kinly and Haven Life Partners to Make Term Life Insurance More Accessible to African-Americans

Haven Life | June 03, 2022

Kinly and Haven Life, a customer-focused life insurance agency backed and entirely owned by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), have announced a new partnership to make term life insurance more accessible to African Americans. Haven Term and Haven Simple term life insurance policies will be offered on the Kinly mobile app for Kinly members because of this partnership. Kinly is a digital bank created with black Americans in mind, who have historically been underserved and underbanked by traditional financial institutions. According to a study commissioned by Haven Life, while black Americans are more likely than white Americans to have life insurance, they are significantly underinsured. The study discovered that white people had a median of $150,000 in life insurance coverage compared to just $50,000 for black people. From our very first day, Haven Life's core mission was to make life insurance more accessible and affordable for everyone. We recognize that systemic barriers still exist for Black Americans when it comes to equitable access to financial planning, banking and insurance products. Seward further added, Our partnership with Kinly is central to our founding mission, and we remain committed to doing everything we can to break down access barriers." Wade Seward, Head of Distribution Strategy at Haven Life. Kinly members can apply for Haven Term and Haven Simple through an online application and, if granted, receive coverage immediately. Haven Term provides coverage of up to $3 million for terms of 5, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years. Haven Simple provides coverage up to $500,000 for 5, 10, or 15 years. Both policies have extremely low rates. For example, a 35-year-old woman in good health could qualify for Haven Term coverage with a 20-year term of $500,000 for only $17.50 per month. Helping Black Americans build generational wealth and financially protect their families was one of our driving principles when launching Kinly, We're excited to be partnering with Haven Life as ensuring access to quality, affordable life insurance is a key part of building such wealth." Donald Hawkins, Founder and CEO.

Counterpart Launches Excess Insurance Product for Small Businesses with Aspen

Counterpart, Aspen Insurance Holdings | July 21, 2022

Counterpart, the management liability insurtech, today announced the launch of its Excess insurance product for small businesses. Backed by Aspen, the Excess policy is another offering to support small businesses in a time of heightened litigation. Counterpart is the first management liability provider to utilize proprietary data and cutting-edge technology in response to the increasing settlement and legal expenses, which can easily bankrupt a small business. Claims expenses have spiked in recent years due to plaintiff friendly legal environments and unrestrained legal fees. This product was built in response to overwhelming demand from Counterpart’s broker partners, including David Alferez, Director, CRC Group, who commented: “Counterpart has been an incredible partner of ours and is once again stepping up to support our team and our clients. We are eager to leverage another one of their best-in-class products.” Counterpart offers Excess insurance on Directors and Officers, Employment Practices and Fiduciary Liability, with a maximum limit of $3 million. Backed by Aspen’s financial strength, the offering will be available for small businesses with less than 250 employees and less than $250 million in revenue and total assets through Counterpart’s wholesale broker partners. “Counterpart has created a compelling and unique offering for small businesses. We’re pleased to further develop our relationship and are excited to support what we see as a natural extension of an already successful management liability product line,” said Zac Clammer, Executive Vice President, Management Liability, Aspen Insurance. “We always operate with the best interest of our customers and Excess insurance has been a real pain point for them over the years due to decreasing limits and coverage,” said Mike Levins, Head of Insurance at Counterpart. “We always operate with the best interest of our customers and Excess insurance has been a real pain point for them over the years due to decreasing limits and coverage,” said Mike Levins, Head of Insurance at Counterpart. “Excess insurance is the most requested product from our brokers, and we have worked closely together to design a product that addresses their wants and needs.
